Praying, Not Pontificating, Is the Answer

I love the very short post on Rorate Caeli entitled “Please, Pope Weigel, Resign from Your Pontificate”. The second paragraph says:

The lack of restraint from those who wish to "frame" the next pontificate is astounding. Küng has tried it, [George] Weigel, still not fully recovered from the end of the Wojtyla pontificate, is trying it as well [see the story at Rorate Caeli]. As for the "schismatic Lefebvrists", their only program seems to be this novena for the election of the Sovereign Pontiff, starting tomorrow. Now, which of these programs seems to be the truly Catholic one?

That does make me laugh! Yes, the novena is the way to go!

Follow the link to the novena of the SSPX – nothing schismatic about the prayers included there! The other day I posted a prayer for the election of a bishop; the SSPX novena includes the more appropriate collect of the Missal for the election of a Pope:

Súpplici, Dómine, humilitáte depóscimus :
ut sacrosánctæ Románæ Ecclésiæ
concédat Pontíficem illum tua imménsa pietas;
qui et pio in nos stúdio semper tibi plácitus,
et tuo pópulo pro salúbri regímine sit assídue
ad glóriam tui nóminis reveréndus.
Per Dóminum.

O Lord, with suppliant humility, we entreat Thee,
that in Thy boundless mercy
Thou wouldst grant the most holy Roman Church a pontiff,
who by his zeal for us, may be pleasing to Thee,
and by his good government may ever be honored by Thy people
for the glory of Thy name.
Through Our Lord Jesus Christ.

And if you’re so inclined, you can “Adopt a Cardinal” for whom to pray during the conclave.

  1. How can anyone consider the Society schismatic when they have never denied the authority of the pope, they pray for him in every mass, and have started this novena!

  2. Yes, that's why I found that quote from Rorate Caeli so amusing - the SSPX clearly had the Catholic response! They don't sound schismatic.
